Paul Vacchio (Inwood, NY) claimed his first tournament win in the early hours of Wednesday morning, besting a field of 231 players after more than 18 hours of play. He'll take home $20,786 and the shiny Borgata Summer Open trophy.
It almost ended for Vacchio in 5th place. On the turn with a board of A T 6 7, he was all-in and at risk holding AT (top two pair) against an opponent with 98 for the straight. A four-outer Ace on the river gave Vacchio Aces-full and the double-up to survive and that key hand propelled him to victory.
The runner-up was Jason 'Gorilla Fish' Evans (Bronx, NY) who earned $12,353 for finishing second. Evans is an IT consultant and doesn't get to play a lot of tournaments, but plans to start playing more.
231 entries generated total buy-ins of $80,850. The final 24 players earned a piece of the prize pool. Lots of Borgata regulars turned out for this Six Max event, but didn't cash, including: James Boyle, Ted Geier, Dan Spirer, Eric Miller, Cathy Dever, Barbara Rogers, Rob Saladin, Stephanie Hubbard
and Ben Geller.
