Event 8 Recap

$400 + $50 Seven Card Stud
Today's Seven Card Stud tournament fielded 42 players, who ponied up the $400 + $50 price tag.  The last Stud standing was Paul Mangine (Bethpage, NY).  For his victory he earned $7,333 and the shiny new Borgata Trophy.

This is Mangine's second Borgata title.  He won the Stud event during the 2008 Borgata Summer Poker Open, along with $18,414.  Stud is definitely his game and his dream is to someday win a bracelet at the World Series of Poker, playing against the best Seven Card Stud players in the world.  For now, he will return to his job working in a bank.

Second-place honors went to Randy Tong (New York, NY).  The businessman from New York took the chip lead with two tables left, but surrendered the lead near the end.  Tong will take home $4,074 for his first-ever reported tournament cash.

Borgata regular Joe Loguidice (Atlantic City, NJ) made the final table of nine, but did not make the money.   Rathe Miller (Philadelphia, PA) has claimed Stud titles at other venues, but is still looking for his first Borgata Open title.  He made it to the final two tables today, but reported to the rail soon after.  Glenn Engelbert (Sicklerville, NJ) who already has two Borgata Open titles, played today, but did not cash.

Mark Gomez

$400 + $50 Seven Card Stud

Alan Sansone (Clifton, NJ) got his last chips in on third street against William Ray (Harrisburg, PA).

Event 7: Frank-ly Speaking

Frank Walden

With players getting comfortable in their seats, we walked over to a three-way all in.  It was our friend from earlier Frank Walden who held the best hand with KK.  He was up against A J (all-in for 25k) and Q Q (who had Frank covered).  Normally Frank would cringe at the site of the A 7 2 8 6 board, but he didn't mind losing the main pot, with the side potting netting him close to 150k.

Event 7: Just Desserts...

Event 5 Recap

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

It was the real world versus a pipe dream and when the final hand was played it was Chris Csik (Martinsville, NJ) whose dreams are now a reality.  The 25 year-old, who plays poker full time, defeated Mike Melkersen (New Market, VA) heads up at the Borgata Summer Poker Open to take down the $38,627 first prize and trophy.

"I can now prove to my parents and my girlfriend that this is no longer a pipe dream," said Csik, who added that he's primarily a cash player in this just his 10th career tournament.

"He played great and deserves it," said Melkersen, who is a lawyer and added, "back to the real world," after winning $22,759, the second largest Borgata cash of his career.

When heads up play began it looked like Melkersen would cruise to the title after building a 6 to 1 chip lead by steam rolling the tables early on Day 2 play.  But Csik bunkered down and used Melkersen's aggression against him.

"I knew if I could survive the first ten hands I'd be alright," said Csik who only had 500k to Melkerson's 3 million chips to start heads up play.  Csik chipped away and turned the tables without being all in and at risk.

"He's very trappy," said Melkersen, "and I'm very aggressive. Those two usually don't work well together.  I should've changed my game and put things on lock down."

Melkersen, who finished 4th in the 2010 Borgata Spring Poker Open ($44,000), was a machine early in the day as he chipped up from the middle of the pack to take the chip lead. He proceeded to knock out four more players, including two on one hand to eventually grab 85% of the chips in play.

He battled David Jones, who began Day 2 with the chip lead, for the big stack at the final table.  Jones got the first two final table knockouts when he sent Tom McDonald (10th) and Mitchell Mantin (9th) to the rail and was back on top with close to one million chips.

Stephanie Hubbard, the last woman standing after she knocked out Cindy Albert in 15th place, took care of Sam Blankenship in eighth place to set up a pivotal hand of the tournament.

Hubbard and Neel Kalani were both all in against Melkersen who cracked aces (Hubbard) and kings (Kalani) on the same hand when he flopped a set of 9s.  Kalani (6th) finished just ahead of Hubbard (7th) because his all-in bet was just 2k more than Hubbard's.

While that went on, Csik sat back and was content to be third in chips.  In fact, other than beating Melkersen heads up, Csik didn't have any other final table knockouts.

Melkerson knocked out Bob Miller in 5th, while Jones took care of Bob Baesch in 4th, before Melkerson ended Jones' day in third place.

The tournament began Saturday with 237 entries which generated a total buy-in of $142,200.  Twenty-seven players cashed as the field played down to the final 18 to end Day 1.

Notables who made the money included Ted Geier (22nd), John Hinds (18th) and Event 1 runner-up Joe Wertz, who missed the final table with a 12th place finish, but has earned more than $46,000 with his two cashes.

"This is number one," says Csik when he ranked this, his highest career cash, among his poker achievements.

"It seems like I can do it," Csik added about making the shift from cash games to tournament poker. Csik noted that he just missed the money in the other three NL tournaments of the series.

"It looks like I'll be playing the main [Summer Championship Event]," he said, something that he was only dreaming about last week.

"This is number one," says Csik when ranking this, his highest career cash, among his poker achievements.

Csik is a 25-year-old, who's primarily a cash game player, but is now looking to play a lot more tournaments.  He says this win goes along with three bubble finishes in the series.

"It seems like I can do it," Csik says, adding that this is roughly only the 10th tournament he's ever played.  "I beat three-quarters of every field I played here, I just didn't cash in all of them.

"I can now prove to my parents and my girlfriend that this is no longer a pipe dream."

Chris Csik takes home the trophy and $38,627 for the win.

Event 5: 2nd Place - Melkersen

"I got frustrated," says Melkersen, who earns the second largest Borgata cash of his career.  "he was hitting everything and I didn't hit anything, but he played great and deserves it."

Melkersen began heads up play with a 6 to 1 chip lead, but Csik chipped away and was never all in and at risk heads up.

"He's very trappy," says Melkersen, "and I'm very aggressive. Those two usually don't work well together.  I should've changed my game and put things on lock down."

Melkersen, who was 4th for $44,000 in the 2010 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship Event, is a full time lawyer and says it's "back to the real world," after a weekend of poker.

Mike Melkersen earns $22,759 for his runner-up finish.

$350 + $50 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Alexander Restrepo

As we headed back over to Table 15, it wasn't hard to miss the mound of chips in front of Alexander Restrepo (Hartford, CT).  Alexander is the first player in this event to eclipse the century mark and was looking to add to his stack.  On a flop of 10x 3x 3x, Restrepo's 3k bet was raised to 23k, which was answered by an all-in from Alexander.  It was the A 10 of Restrepo against his opponent's K 10.  The case 10 came on the turn, and after a brick on the river, Restrepo was left to chop the pot.

The re-entry period is now over, and players will be going on break in just over five minutes.  When they return, the blinds will be 600/1200/200.  We will have an updated player count once we return from break.

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Bill Frymer (Guttenberg, NJ)
$1,793

Just seconds after Joe Wertz busts on table 2, Frymer is right behind him heading to the pay window from table 1.

On a board of 10 K Q J 5, Frymer moves his short stack all in.  Melkersen seems mildly concerned about a possible flush, but it turns out he's only "playing" with his oppponent.

Melkersen calls and shows A 6 for the ace high straight.  Frymer is second best when his 9 5 completes the low end of the straight.

Bill Frymer is out in 11th place worth $1,793.

The remaining 10 players are drawing for their final table seats.

Event 5: 12th Place - Wertz

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Joe Wertz (Brigantine, NJ)
$1,793

Wertz's goal of winning a Borgata trophy will have to wait for another tournament after his K J is crushed by the pocket kings of Chris Csik.

"I didn't have to put it in there," says the Event 1 runner-up, "I could've folded some more."

Wertz was crippled earlier in the level when he doubled-up Bob Baesch on a coin flip.  Wertz lost 101k when his A K didn't improve against Baesch's pocket 10, leaving him with 82k.

Wertz, who has four second place Borgata finishes, earns $1,793 for finishing 12th.

Event 7: A Gr8 Escape

$350 + $50 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

It's always been said that the only real thing you can do in the early levels of a tournament is lose it.  So with the re-entry option out there, it's very easy to get married to good hands and ship it away.  On a flop of 10c 9c Qs, Bobby Chee (Staten Island, NY) was heads up and fired a bet of 3100 into his opponent.  His bet was immediately raised to 13100, and after sizing up his opponent's stack, Chee flatted.  The turn was the 8h, and Chee then open shoved for 32k.  His opponent folded and showed Q 10, thinking the 8 was one of the less appealing turn cards.  But it actually may of helped him, because Chee had flopped the nuts (K J), and Bobby was left to contemplate if three betting the flop may of been the optimal line.

Event 7: Settling In

$350 + $50 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

The last seconds of Level 6 are ticking off the clock, and the blinds are going up to 300/600/75.  It is very early in the tournament, but Khaled Alwan (Wayne, NJ) is doing his best to be the first to separate himself from the field.  He is currently the big stack in the room, and sits with just under 70k.

Some even later arrivals:

Morgan Litwin

Players have until the conclusion of the break after Level 8 to re-enter (approximately 90 minutes), or they can wait until tomorrow to see if their good run shows up (Day 1B).

Event 7: Carrying The Torch

$350 + $50 Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Tuetonico and Rapoport

Vincent Tuetonico (Staten Island, NY) had success in this event in our Borgata Spring Open, taking home fourth place money for his efforts.  He's hoping to make a further run this time, but has some formidable competition sitting directly to his left.  Yevgeni Rapoport (Brooklyn, NY) won Event 1 of this Summer Open, taking home just under $80,000.  Rapoport was heads up against Joseph Wertz, who is following his runner-up showing with a super deep run in Event 6 (12 players currently remain).

Event 5: Dirty Dozen

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

The final 12 players are back from a color-up break as blinds are now 4k/8k, 1k ante.

On the last hand of the previous level Stephanie Hubbard got a double-up through chip leader
David Jones when her jacks held against Q 10.

Event 5: 13th Place - Vizirov

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Len Vizirov (Chalfont, PA)
$1,517

Blinds 3k/6k, 500 ante

Vizirov calls from the button and Bill Frymer moves all in for 140k.  Vizirov has slightly less and makes the call.

Vizirov: Q♣ 10♣
Frymer: J♠ J

Vizirov hits a 10 on the flop, but doesn't improve after that and is out in 13th place, earning $1,517.

Event 5: 14th Place - Odom

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Charles Odom (Bishopville, MD)
$1,517

After leaking chips, Odom is down to 70k and takes a stand with pocket 8s.  He's in bad shape against Bob Baesch's pocket jacks and doesn't improve.

Odom is out in 14th place and takes home $1,517, while Baesch improves to 340k and is now top three in chips.

Event 5: 15th Place - Albert

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

 Cindy Albert (Germantown, MD)
$1,517

A slow bleed where Cindy Albert says she had "no pocket pairs all day," she moves are last 22k all in from the big blind.

Unfortunately the friendly woman known on Twitter as @PokerPeach is up against the pocket aces of Stephanie Hubbard.  Albert's Q 6 doesn't improve, is on the rail and actually feels bad for Hubbard, who "only got my measly left overs with her aces."

Albert takes home $1,517 for her 15th place finish, while Hubbard is the last woman standing.

Event 5: 16th Place - Nguyen

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Hoa Nguyen (Fairfax, VA)
$1,379

After doubling up Stephanie Hubbard with A5 against her pocket 10s, Nguyen is on the rail with K 4 against the A 7 of chip leader David Jones.

Nguyen sends his last 33k to Jones and is out in 16th place, good for $1,379

Event 5: 17th Place - Brozenick

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Chris Brozenick  (Germantown, MD)
$1,379

A8 is unkind to Brozenick who first loses 70k to Mike Melersen who hits trip 9s. He's down to only 50k when A8 runs into the QQ of Sam Blankenship.

Brozenick takes home $1,379 for his 17th place finish.

Event 5: 18th Place - Hinds

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

John Hinds (Winterville, NC)
$1,379

Hinds is crippled on the second hand of play when he raises from the button and short stack Mitchell Mantin moves all in for 55k from the big blind.  Hinds calls with pocket 10s against A J.

Mantin flops two hearts and hits his flush on the turn to double-up.  Hinds is cut in half and is down to 53k and out two hands later.  Coincidentally he busts with AJ against pocket 10s.

John Hinds finishes in 18th place, earning $1,379.

      Event 6 Recap

      $260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

When the final hand was played in the wee hours Sunday morning, Sean Ketter (Chesapeake, VA) had all the chips, $7,591, and the shiny new Borgata Summer Open trophy.  Quite an accomplishment when you consider that this is his first ever live tournament of any kind.

Ketter learned how to play poker in the Navy.  "That's what we do when we have free time".  He's been discharged and now works for a private military contractor.  Ketter is headed home today, so will leave with his perfect record intact.

Second place went to Andy Blum (Brigantine, NJ) along with $4,121.  Blum plays mostly cash games and fills his time with poker when not working at his other job as a software engineer.  He loves all the games and plans to play the $100,000 Guaranteed $350 Deep Stack Double Play tomorrow, then the Omaha H/L and HORSE events.

Carolyn Dejesu (Huntington, NY) was the last woman in this event and she claimed third place, good for $2,603.  She's been playing poker as long as she can remember and plays all the games.  "I'm good at everything" she says.  Regarding this event, she felt she played a solid game, but after midnight, she felt a bit "delirious".

A total of 86 players in this event generated total buy-ins of $22,360.  The final nine earned a piece of the prize pool.  Among those entries were Borgata regulars Gil Sacks, Michael Farahnick, Gloria Lorusso , George Medrano, and Leonardo Palermo.  None of these familiar faces made the money.

Robert Melo (Howard Beach, NY) made two Summer Open final tables in two days, finishing 5th in event 4 and 8th in event 3.  He went for the three-peat in this event, but busted out early in the day.

"Pot Limit Omaha High/Low is the best game" third-place finisher Carolyn Dejesu said, "even though it is hard to find."  The best things in life usually are.

      Final Results

      Kirkor Tekneci (Queens, NY)
      $1,301

Kirkor Teknici got all-in pre-flop against Sean Ketter.  Sean flopped two pair with his AQxx and Kirkor whiffed his low draw.  He was busted in 6th place ($1,301).

      Mark Wileczek (West Chester, PA)
      $1,518

Mark Wileczek was all-in pre-flop against Andy Blum.

      Mark: AKJ4
      Andy: AAK6

The board fell K 2 2 T 8 so no low was possible.  Andy took the pot with Aces-up.

Mark took 5th place and $1,518

      Event 6: Lead Change

      $260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

The final six players have been moving chips around the table for a while now.

      Blinds are up to 6k/12k.

Sean Ketter and Andy Blum got to the river with a board of K K 4 4 3.  Andy bet 60k and Sean called.

Andy showed T432 for 4s-full-of-3s.  Sean tossed in his AK75 (trip Kings).

With that pot, Andy chipped up to about 300k, good for the chip lead.  Sean was left with ~130k.
