Event 5: Bubble-Time

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Blinds Up!

Level 15: Blinds1,500/3,000 with 400 ante.

Down to 28 players and it is bubble-time.  They're playing hand-for-hand until one more player is eliminated.

David Jones has grown his stack to ~400k and still holds the chip lead.

Goners:
Harry Binda, Jr (no three-peat for Harry)
Helene Strafford
Harry Korotki

Event 6: Stuck at Ten

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Level 16:  Blinds 2,500/5,000

Miraculously, there are still ten players at the final table.

Richie Rubinstein was all in from the big blind and did not look at his cards until the river.

On the board of A 4 2 6 4, Adrian Stoch had Aces-up and a 6-4 low with A863.  Richie squeezed his cards for the table and found AAT7 for Aces-full to take the high-half of the pot.

Jace Reiken was then all-in pre-flop against two opponents; he scooped and tripled up.

Event 5: Melkersen Doubles Thru Hinds

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Mike Melkersen and John Hinds got involved in a pot that was 3-bet preflop.  On the flop of A 3 2 with two hearts, Mike bet 25k and John shoved over the top, having Mike covered.

 Mike Melkersen

Mike called all-in, showing AK.  John's AQ was dominated.  The last two changed nothing and Mike doubled up to ~200k, leaving John with ~60k.

That was the last hand of the level and the players took a break.

Play resumed after the break with level 14, blinds 1,200/2,400 with 300 ante.

They're down to 32 players, just 5 away from the money.

Event 6: Final Table, Finally

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

They finally sorted out the chips and less than two minutes after the clock was started, a player busted out (11th place, $0).

It is now bubble-time, since only the final 9 players earn a piece of the prize pool.

The remaining 10 players drew seats and moved to the final table.  Here they are, with some approximate chip counts:

1 - Sean Ketter - 160k
2 - Richie Rubinstein - 8,500
3 - Mark Wileczek - 80k
4 - Carolyn Dejesu - 145k
5 - Andy Blum - 170k
6 - Kirkor Tekneci - 85k
7 - Adrian Stoch - 80k
8- Gary Hutzler - 65k
9 - Jim Forenza  - 200k
10 - Jace Reiken - 26k

Event 5: Jones Claims Chip Lead

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

A short-stack shoved from the cutoff and big stack David Jones (York, PA) called from the small blind, tabling JT suited.

 David Jones

The shortie had him dominated with AJ, but the cards fell 8 2 2 Q 9 and David went runner-runner to make a straight.  He collected the pot, sending his opponent to the rail in 37th place ($0).

With 36 players remaining, table 5 broke and David racked up about 375k and moved over to table 4 with the other big stack, Hoa Nguyen.

Still 9 players to go to reach the money.

Event 6: Play Has Paused

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Blinds Up!

Level 15:  Blinds 2k/4k.

The Omaha-lics are down to 11 players remaining, two from the money.

A problem occurred with a very large pot that should have been split, but was pushed to one player and mingled with his stack of remaining chips.

They have paused the clock while the pot is reconstructed to correct the error, so play has stopped on both tables.

Event 5: Binda is Back

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Blinds up!

Level 13:  Blinds 1k/2k with 300 ante.

Harry Binda Jr. (Cleveland, OH) is back again today, trying for three cashes in a row.

He finished 21st in event 2, $350 Black Chip Bounty NLH, for $791.
He finished 22nd in event 4, $300 Big Stack NLH, for $722.

Today, he's actually sitting in the same seat he was in last night, late in event 4:  Table 1, Seat 8.  It remains to be seen if this will turn out to be a lucky coincidence for Harry.

Harry Binda Jr & John Hinds

Unfortunately for Harry, he's got John Hinds sitting on his immediate left with a lot of chips.

Event 5: Five Tables Remain

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

They're down to 5 tables and as players bust out now, they will go to 9-handed play.

Looks like Hoa Nguyen is still the chip leader, but it is hard to count his towers of chips.

48 players remain.  Average stack is 74k.

There are still three ladies in the hunt:

Cynthia Albert
Stephanie Hubbard
Helene Strafford

Event 6: Dinner is Done

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

The final 16 players have retaken their seats and are getting back to the business of trying to bust someone.

Seven more must go to reach the money.

Level 14: Blinds 1,500/3,000.

Event 5: Back in Action

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

54 players are back from dinner and getting back to business.

With only 27 getting paid, they're at the 50/50 mark:  50% of the remaining players will get paid, and 50% of them will leave empty-handed.

Level 12:  Blinds 800/1,600 with 200 ante.

Event 5: Numbers Game

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Number of Entries: 237
Players Remaining: 54
Chips in Play: 3.55 million

Average Stack: 66k (44 BB)
Big Stack: 230k (144 BB)

Total Buy-In:$142,200

Event 6: Dinner Break

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Carolyn Climbing the Chip Counts

The final 16 players are on dinner break and while Sean Ketter (Chesapeake, VA) continues to have a massive stack, the last woman standing Carolyn Dejesu (Huntington, NY) is second with 130k.

Players are on break until 8:45 pm.

Event 5: Suckout City

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

 Hoa to be Running Good

As players go to dinner, Hoa Nguyen (Fairfax, VA) says he has the chip leader because of  "suckouts."

Another player chimes in, "running like God," as Nguyen has 230k.

Nguyen says he recently beat AK with A7, but the bigger suckout comes when he puts a player all in for his last 40k on a board of A A 8.

Opponent: A 9
Nguyen: 8♣ 2♣

Of course Nguyen goes runner, runner club for the flush and takes his stack to more than 200k.

Players are on a one hour break and return for play at 8:45 pm.

Event 5: Taylor Made Dinner Plans

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Taylor, Green Machine

Bob Taylor (Garwood, NJ) was table captain for the green chips, but says he's not taking dinner reservations when players break at 7:40 pm.

Event 5: Belmont Break

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Players Watch the Overhead Monitor

The color-up break comes at the perfect time as players check out the Belmont Stakes.  Union Rags is the winner, but there isn't a lot of celebrating despite a close finish.

Event 6: Great Wall of China

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

 Ketter Continues the Climb

Chip leader Sean Ketter (Chesapeake, VA) continues to extend his lead with 3 tables and 27 players remaining.  One player says Ketter has built the "Great Wall of China" and has 174k (116 BB), nearly 20% of the one million chips in play.

The average stack is 37k (25 BB) as blind are up to 800/1500.

Event 5: Big Stacks

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

 Frymer Feeling Good

Three players have emerged as big stacks and are all well more than 100k.

Name-Chip Count

Bill Frymer (Guttenberg, NJ) 170k
Bobby Baesch (Berlin, MD) 150k
Mike Melkersen (New Market, VA) 130k

80 players remain with an average stack of  44k (44 BB) as blinds are now 500/1k, 100 ante.

Horsing Around

Belmont Stakes

Despite yesterday's announcement that I'll Have Another was scratched from the Belmont Stakes, the Borgata Racebook is still buzzing with activity. With just one hour to post time, we take a random sampling of predictions even though the Triple Crown is no longer possible.

Horse handicapper Mickey Woll doesn't like any of the action and says, "it's just another race," and won't be betting the race.

Dave Chester likes the 1 horse, Street Life
Deb Daly is eying the 2 horse, Unstoppable U

With that advice, the Gorilla figures why not box the exacta using the 1 and 2.

See you in the winner's circle (or at least the cashier's window!).

Event 6: Payouts

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Entries: 86
Total Buy-In: $22,360

Place - Amount

1st $7,591
2nd $4,121
3rd $2,603
4th $1,952
5th $1,518
6th $1,301
7th $1,085
8th $868
9th $651

Event 5: Blinds Up, Players Down

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Less than half the field remains as 110 players of 237 entries are still in the running for the $38,627 top prize.

The average sack is 32k (54 BB) as blind are up to 300/600, 75 ante.

Event 6: Scoop to Stay Alive

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Mamedov (2nd from left) & Dan Siegel (center)
Watch Ryan (standing) and Dealer Luis Ship the Scoop

The runner-up in Event 3 (PLO) gets a much needed scoop to stay alive.

Zaur Mamedov (Cherry Hill, NJ) hits a three on the river to give him the nut low and a set of 3s.

Mamedov, who originally hails from Kiev, Ukraine won $4,504 for his second place finish and is now back to an average stack with 28k.

Event 5: Bigger Stack

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Ferris in "Beast" Mode

On a board of 2♣ 7 6♠ J♣ A♠, Claudius Ferris (Hollis, NY) raises his opponent from 6,600 to 19k. The player makes the crying call and when Ferris shows A♣ J for two pair, the opponent frustratedly shows pocket queens.

The river ace helps Ferris take his stack to 135k and is one of the big stacks in the room.

"Everybody knows me as 'the beast,' says Ferris as he stacks his chips into silo like towers.

Event 6: Big Stacks

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Sean Shows Off his Stack

As play resumes, the big stacks are obvious.  Sean Ketter (Chesapeake, VA) is the chip leader with 78k and says his key to success is, "pot, pot, pot."

Second in chips is the always talkative Phimmasone Anoput (Fairfax Station, VA) who's at 62k.  Anoput finished 6th in this event in April.

Third place finisher Michael Farahnick (New York, NY) is also still in the field.

Event 6: Color-up Break

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Break Time

It's a color-up break as the green (25) chips are now out of play.

57 players remain of the 86 starting field and the average stack is 18k (60 BB)

Play resumes with level 6 (150/300 blinds).

Event 5: Hate the Player, Not the Game

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Broccoli, Walnuts & Mushrooms for Odom

We're not sure what game Chuck Odom (Jersey City, NJ) hates. It may or may not be poker.

Read'em & Weep

Event 5: Making Every Second Count

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

As players are going on their second break of the day, Harry Korotki (Owings Mills, MD) has yet to play a hand.

"Just got here," says the former Borgata trophy winner as he takes his seat.  "Worse case scenario I would've played tomorrow."

Korotki says even with late registration closing he really didn't cut it that close. It was a matter if he would have time to check-in to the hotel, which he did.

"I checked in and I checked in," he says about getting his tournament seat.

As play resumes, Korotki, who took home $40,000 as the purple chip bounty tournament in the 2011 Borgata Fall Poker Open, has to wait one more hand.

As luck would have it, he's seated at a table between the small blind and button and has to wait one more hand before he can play.

Event 6: More Familiar Faces

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

As the PLO event rolls on we highlight a couple of familiar faces in the crowd including two-time Borgata trophy winner Gill Sacks (Wynnewood, PA).

Faces in the Crowd

Gil Sacks
Michael Farahnick
Gloria Lorusso
George Medrano
Leonardo Palermo (busted)
Robert Melo (busted)

Event 5: Re-entry AND Late Registration

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Palermo & Hinds

How is re-entry and late registration possible?  Just ask Leonardo Palermo (Toms River, NJ).

"I just busted the PLO, so now I'm here," says Palermo who is re-entering a Borgata tournament, just not the one he started in.

His entry into the NL event is late registration and technically not re-entry, but you get the idea.

There's always a tournament going on at Borgata.

Also with late registration at the table is John Allan Hinds (Winterville, NC), who got a double up right away.  "We've had three knockouts in less than an orbit."

There's lots of action during this last level to enter the tournament.

Event 5: Last Level to Enter

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Level 4 (100/200) is underway and is the last level to re-enter.  Players we've seen heading back to the cage include John Dibella, Paul Leon, & D.L.

D.L. likes to keep a low profile, but since arriving at his new table, which is also a late registration table, he's already tripled-up with two knock outs.

D.L. with a set of 9s on his most recent elimination.

Event 6: Permission Slip

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Robert Melo (Howard Beach, NY) hangs up the phone, walks over to media row and says, "I got permission to try for three in a row."

Melo has been on a hot streak the last couple of days with back-to-back final tables and $6,500 in earnings. After an 8th place finish in PLO, Melo comes back for 5th place in Event 4 (NL), and is now looking for three final tables in a row.

"I've been here since Wednesday," he says, "so I had to call home to make sure I could stay late."

Melo is glad to give a shout out to his wife Ellen and says, "she's going to get a piece of whatever I'm up, probably 50%."

With that kind of return, maybe Melo can get a two week pass for entire Borgata Summer Poker Open.

*****1:30 PM Update*****

Less than an hour later Melo is out of the tournament. When the table is asked who busted him, the response is, "he busted himself." Ouch.

Event 5: Sexy, Sensual & Sizzling

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Mermelstein Looking for Mur.Mur Magic

We'll let the ladies decide if Aaron Mermelstein (Philadelphia, PA) fits the headline description, but he's happy to represent the tagline of Mur.Mur.

Borgata nightlife heats up just down the hall from the Poker Room, but Mermelstein says "I've been there recently, but not last night."

No doubt Mermelstein got a good night sleep so he could bring his "A" game to the tournament.

"If I ship it [the tournament], maybe they'll give me some bottle service," he says after folding to an all-in bet.

Event 6: Chop It Up

$260 + $40 Pot Limit Omaha 8B

Omaha is back on center stage, but this is the first high/low tournament of the series, which means lots of chopped pots.

The PLO starting stack is 12k with 30 minute levels (Levels 11+ / 40 min.).

The biggest catch of this one-day tournament is that there are no re-entries.  Only one chance to make the money so use your chips wisely.

Let the scooping begin!

Event 5: Millionaire Club

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

 Dibella's Head Scratcher

The beauty of poker is that the cards don't know if you're a professional or a first timer, local or international, high-roller or scraping to get by.  Anyone who puts up the entry fee has an equal shot at taking home the big money.

Take John Dibella (New York, NY) for example, the newly minted millionaire after his win in the 2012 PCA Champion doesn't mean much in today's action at Borgata.

On a board of A 8 2, he's thrilled when an 8 hits the board to give Dibella trips, but gives up in disgust when a second ace falls on the river.

Before folding Dibella flashes an eight for the under boat and knows his opponent held an ace for aces full of eights.

"If it's not an ace, I hope to get all her chips," he says to the table.

Dibella is no professional, but the New York day-trader was thrilled that he added nearly $2 million to his bankroll while merely dabbling in poker.

And the game rolls on.

Event 5: Familiar Faces

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

It was only a few hours ago that Justin Burton (New York, NY) was at the final table of Event 4 finishing 8th ($2,841).

There's no rest for the weary as he's back at the tables and seated next to another final tableist in Joe Wertz (Brigantine, NJ) was runner-up in Event 1 ($44,458).

As players continue to fill-in, a look at some familiar faces:

Justin Burton
Joe Wertz
Leo G
Ted Geier
Mickey Woll
Gordon Eng
Howard Wolper
Mike Melkersen
James Boyle
Chris Edwards
David Laufer

Event 5: $660 Saturday

$600 + $60 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

The largest opening week's buy-in of the Borgata Summer Poker Open is underway.

The $660 entry gets you 15k in chips and levels are 40 minutes each (Levels 11+ / 50 min.).

Players love format as unlimited re-entries are available for the first four levels.

This two-day event is off and running!

      Event 4 Recap

      $300 + $40 Big Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

After more than 19 hours of play, Adam Bragar (New York, NY) was the last man sitting, claiming the top prize of $26,010 and the beautiful Borgata trophy.  He works in private equities and plays tournaments whenever he can.  "This is only the second tournament I've won...ever," he said.

Heads-up he faced Ragavan 'Rags' Thiagarajah (Marlton, NJ) and began with the chip lead, but Rags doubled up with Queens versus Jacks and eventually took the chip lead.  Then "I made a mistake" Rags admitted.  "I thought my Ace-high was good".  Bragar also had an Ace, with a better kicker, and doubled up, leaving Rags with only 14 big blinds.

On the final hand, Rags got his chips in good, but was run down on the turn.  He takes home $14,448 for second place.  The pharmacist may have to sleep in his car for a few hours, but may return in just a few to play Saturday's 11am tournament.

Third place and $8,958 went to Tony Abiyaghi (Toms River, NJ).  He got his last chips in good with AJ, but Bragar ran him down with A7 when he flopped a 7.

Notable among this final table was Robert Melo, (Howard Beach, NY) who made two final tables in two days.  On Thursday he finished 8th in the $260 PLO event ($948).  Today he took 5th and $5,587.

A total of 331 entries resulted in total buy-ins of $99,300, with the final 36 players getting a piece of the pie.

The highest finishing female was Svetlana Gromenkova (Brooklyn, NY) who went out 19th ($722).  Gromenkova won the Ladies event at the 2008 WSOP ($224,702).  She's still looking for her first Borgata Open win.

Lots of Borgata regulars filled this field, but didn't cash, including James Boyle, Mike Shasho, Mickey Woll, Sheree Bykofsky, George Medrano, Joe Brooks, Paul Leon, Gordon Eng, Nancy Martin, Joe Liberta, John Del Rossi, and Dan Spirer.

After playing so long, it was difficult for the guys at this final table to think beyond getting some sleep, but we might see them again for other events during the Borgata Summer Open.  "Amazing...I expected to be out of here by 6pm" Bragar said.  He's got plans to meet friends later today for the race at Belmont, but like many, he's lost interest.

      Final Table Results
1   Adam Bragar (New York, NY)  $26,010
2   Ragavan 'Rags' Thiagarajah (Marlton, NJ)  $14,448
3  Tony Abiyaghi  (Toms River, NJ)  $8,958
4  Adam Peterson (Gambrills, MD)  $7,224
5  Robert Melo (Howard Beach, NY)  $5,587
6  Rob Behrenst (Fairfax, VA)  $4,720
7  Ahmad Wardak (Gambrills, MD)  $3,805
8  Justin Burton (New York, NY)  $2,841
9  Bernie Dominiak (Pittsburgh, PA)  $1,926
10  Mike Rosa (Vienna, VA)  $1,252

      Event 4: 1st Place - Bragar

      $300 + $40 Big Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

      Adam Bragar (New York, NY)
      $26,010

After more than 19 hours of play, Adam Bragar finally came out on top of the field.  For his win he will pick up $26,010.

He's got plans to meet friends at Belmont for the race later today, but he's lost interest, as have many fans of horse-racing, due to the scratch of I'll Have Another.

He's headed home to New York City now and sleep is going to be the first item on his agenda.

      Event 4: 2nd Place - Thiagarajah

      $300 + $40 Big Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

      Ragavan 'Rags' Thiagarajah (Marlton, NJ)
      $14,448

On a King-high flop, Rags was all-in and called.  He had K9 and was ahead of Adam Bragar's K8.  Rags' kicker was good, but he paired it on the river to improve to two pair.

He doubled up to almost 3 million, pulling almost even with Adam.

After jousting a bit more, Rags pulled into the lead.

Adam was all-in for nearly 2.9 million with AT against Rags' A3.  The board fell J T 6 2 2 and Adam doubled up to nearly 5.8 million.  Rags was left with ~850k.

On the final hand, Rags was all-in and ahead with A8.

      Adam had T7 suited.

The board came A J 8 T T and Adam had all 6.6 million chips in play.

      Rags finished 2nd for $14,448.

      Event 4: 3rd Place - Abiyaghi

      $300 + $40 Big Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

      Tony Abiyaghi  (Toms River, NJ)
      $8,958

Blinds are up to 30k/60k with 5k ante.

After passing chips around for a bit, Tony Abiyaghi got all in with the best of it, holding AJ suited against Adam Bragar's A7 off.

The board ran bad for Tony:  T 7 5 T 2 and Adam took the pot.

Tony will pick up $8,958 for 3rd place.

Adam is now heads-up with Rags, who has about 1.5 million of the 6.6 million chips in play.  Adam has all the rest.

      Event 4: 4th Place - Peterson

      $300 + $40 Big Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

      Adam Peterson (Gambrills, MD)
      $7,224

Rags was all-in and ahead with pocket Queens.  Adam Bragar had pocket Jacks.

Rags flopped a set and it was over on the turn.  He doubled up to 1.7 million.  Adam was left with ~2.4 million.

Tony Abiyaghi has about 1.8 million and Adam Peterson has a little over 300k.
