Event 16 Recap

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

When heads up play began, the winner was guaranteed to be a father of four, they just didn't know it would take three hours to decide the newest Borgata Summer Poker Open Champion.

After a grueling two day grind it's Tom Evers (East Northport, NY) who defeated Alex Torres (Cliffside Park, NJ) on Father's Day for the title to win his second Borgata trophy.

"This one was a lot of tougher at the end with the final two tables," said Evers, who earned $35,210 for the win. He won his first title during January's Borgata Winter Poker Open ($53,000).

The last hand played out with Evers hitting a card on the river, something he also did to stay alive early in heads-up play. "I kept getting two or three-outed on the river," said Torres who watched the final card give Evers a higher two pairs.

"I'm used to the ups and down, that's poker."

Evers and Torres, who both have four children, spent a lot more time with each other than they did with their families this Father's Day.

Day 2 began with the 18 returning players all in the money and when they got to the final table third place finisher Pierre Bowery did most of the dirty work. He knocked out four players including three in a row when he sent Jason Loehrs, Michael Skraptis and Arnold Dinio out 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively.

Bowery couldn't continue the momentum and was eliminated by Torres in third place who pulled even with Evers in chips for their heads up battle.

Also in the final 10 were Karthik (7th), William Klevitz (8th), Avi Kataria (9th) and Michael Benisty (10th).

Just missing the final table was Danny Yousefzadeh, (Roslyn, NY) who finished 11th for $2,347. Yousefzadeh won the 2007 WSOP Circuit Championship at Caesar's AC, good for almost $489,000.

Jordan Ludwick (Cherry Hill, NJ) followed up his win in event 7, the $100,000 Guaranteed $350 Deep Stack Double Play No Limit Hold'em event ($58,443), with a 13th place finish ($2,054).

121 players entered this event, making the total buy-ins $121,000. One of the notable players who did not earn a piece of the pie was Bill Gazes (New York, NY).  Gazes had pocket kings cracked twice, on back-to-back hands, late on Day 1. Gazes has amassed more than $2.3 million in lifetime tournament earnings, but failed to add to his bankroll.

Evers joins a growing list of two-time Borgata trophy winners as he now has book ends.

"She [wife Lori] gets the money, I get the trophy," said Evers a 50-year-old CFO, who will be back Monday to play in the Championship Event.

Event 16 Winner: Evers

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Tom Evers (East Northport, NY)
$35,210

Blinds 20k/40k/4k ante

After playing heads up for more than three hours all the chips are in preflop.

Alex Torres: K♣ 4♠
Tom Evers: J 10

Flop: 4 8♣ 6♦  (Torres pair of 4s)

Turn: 6♠ (Torres two pairs)

River: J♦  (Evers higher two pairs)

The jack on the river gives Evers two pairs and his second Borgata title.

"This one was a lot of tougher at the end with the final two tables," says Evers, who won his first title during January's Borgata Winter Poker Open ($53,000).  "The final two [Torres and Pierre Bowery] were both tough, young aggressive players."

Evers is a 50-year-old CFO, who will be back Monday to play in the Championship Event.

While he didn't get to see his four children on Father's Day, Evers was glad they "let" him play as a gift.  Wife Lori was on the rail, while Jax, T.J., Danielle and John followed the blog and all the updates from home.

"She [Lori] gets the money, I get the trophy," says Evers, who now has a bookend for his Winter Open title, which he proudly displays next to autographed Derek Jeter and Darryl Strawberry baseballs.

In addition to the trophy, Tom Evers earns $35,210 for the win.

Event 16: 2nd Place - Torres

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Alex Torres (Cliffside Park, NJ)
$19,366

On the final hand Torres is all in preflop with K♣ 4♠ against the J 10of Tom Evers.

Torres flops a four, but a river jack gives Evers a higher two pairs and the title.

"The river got me a couple of times," says Torres who was one card away from the title earlier in the three hour heads up match and settles for runner-up.

"I'm used to the ups and down, that's poker."

The 29-year-old professional gives a special Father's Day shout out to his children Jacob, Makayla, Analissa and Xavian.  Torres sports a lot of tattoos, many of them spiritual in nature, and gives credit for his success "my Lord, Jesus Christ."

Alex Torres earns $19,366 for his second place finish.

After a three-bet, three players see a flop of J 8 4 . The first player checks, Eugene 'the Tourist" Juergens bets 5k and Ben Starkweather (New York, NY) makes it 15k.

The original preflop raiser folds and Juergens goes in the tank.  He counts out the raise, counts out his total stack which is around 60k.

Juergens struggles with the decision for several minutes and eventually folds pocket queens face up.

In a show of respect Starkweather shows him pocket kings and says, "I normally don't show, but that's such a great fold."

Juergens' initial reaction, "am I great or what?"  He's genuinely appreciative and adds, "thank you for saying that."

Starkweather is one of the players going after the $3,00 bonus that goes to the end of Day 1A chip leader.

Alex called, showing AT off.  He was crushed by Danny's pocket Aces.

The flop came Q Q J.  "King-ball" said Alex.  Sure enough, turn was a King giving Alex Broadway.

Danny needed a Queen or the case Ace on the river to survive (three outs) but the river was a 6.

Danny finished 11th for $2,347.

Champ: Gastone Flushes Eyzerovich

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Borgata Leaderboard points leader Steve Eyzerovich (Staten Island, NY) is on the rail when he moves all in for nearly a full stack (29k) with a diamond draw.

Ken Gastone (Clifton, NJ) goes in the tank and calls with a bigger diamond draw, but has to worry about Eyzerovich's live card and a gutshot straight draw.

Gastone: Q 6
Eyzerovich: 8 5

The 3 by the river gives Gastone the winning flush to bust Eyzerovich, who is contemplating the re-entry option.

Event 16: Kataria Holds On

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Avinash's AK was dominating Michael's AT suited.

The board came A 6 4 2 Q and Avinash doubled up.

A couple of hands later, action folded to Avinash in the small blind, who moved in for 61k.  Tom Evers (bb) showed a 4 and surrendered his big blind.

Champ: "Table Change"

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Frustrated cash game players ask for a table change, but in tournament's there is no such option unless it's a re-entry.

Of course the table change only happens if bust and re-enter which is the path that Mike Melkersen is taking.  "They even give you 30,000 chips," jokes Melkersen who has re-entered for $2,700 after shipping his last 6k on a nine high flop with A Q.

"Who knew he had as set of nines," adding, "we'll try this again."

Registration is open until the end of Level 4 (100/200) which will conclude at 3:30 pm.

Event 16: Skrapits Doubles

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

On the turn with a scary board of A Q J T, Danny Yousefzadeh bet and Alex Torres called.  They checked the river and Danny showed pocket 7s.  Alex had pocket Tens and had turned a set.  He collected the pot.

Michael Skrapits (button) was all-in for 97k and called by Pierre Bowery.

Michael had pocket 9s and was racing against AK.

The flop was an innocent 6 6 2.  Then a King came on the turn, giving Pierre the lead with a pair of Kings.  It looked like Michael was headed for the rail, then a 2-outer 9 fell on the river, giving Michael 9s-full.  He doubled up.

End of level and time for a break.  Still eleven players.

Event 16: Chip Lead Update

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Blinds are up to 3k/6k with 500 ante.

Champ: Ladies Event Update

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

A second woman has joined the field and it's a familiar face Laura Camuso (Woburn, MA).

Camuso is a Borgata trophy winner who won the deep stack semi-turbo for $17,000 during April's Borgata Spring Poker Open.  She joins Alicia Lane (Vienna, VA) as the only two woman entered so far in Day 1A.

Level 4 (100/200) is underway.

Event 16: 12th Place - Silverman

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Jose Silverman (Ovedo, FL)
$2,347

Jason Loehrs opened for 11k utg and Jose Silverman moved in from the big blind for ~40k.

Jason looked him up with pocket 5s.   Jose was racing with AK of spades.

The flop came King-high with two spades, giving Jose the lead with a pair of Kings and flush redraw.

Turn was a red 5, giving the lead back to Jason with a set of 5s.  River was an offsuit 9, and no help to Jose.  He busted out in 12th place.

Champ: Woman's Touch on Father's Day

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

 Wicker, Lane & Cunix

There are lots of father's in the field, but so far just one woman.  Alicia Lane (Vienna, VA) is back at Borgata and looking to spend some of her bankroll.

Even though she only has one career cash for $637 in a 2008 Borgata Ladies tournament, Lane has some money to burn.

"As you get older it's time to start spending your money," says the modest 46-year-old.  "Why not have some fun," she adds while playing in her first event of the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

Lane is a contractor for the government and says, "if I tell you, I'd have to kill you," when asked for specifics of the work she does.

Lane is stuck between two more experienced players in Jeff Wicker (Bristol, PA) and Shawn Cunix (Columbus, PA) and says, "if I bust, I'll head right for the cash games."

Event 16: 13th Place - Ludwick

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Jordan Ludwick (Cherry Hill, NJ)
$2,054

Michael Skrapits moved in for 57,500 on the button and Jordan Ludwick called from the big blind.

Michael's pocket Jacks were racing against Jordan's AK.

The board came Q T 8 Q 3 and Michael doubled up.  Jordan was left with about 50k.

On the next hand, Pierre Bowery opened for 13k on the button and Jordan moved all in from the small blind.

Pierre had A8; Jordan had 54.  The board fell 3 2 2 7 7 and Pierre took the pot with his Ace kicker.

Jordan Ludwick finished in 13th place ($2,054).

Champ: Another Elimination

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

With the re-entry double play format players, aren't afraid to put their chips in the middle and Sean Cunix (Columbus, OH) gets his opponent to do just that.

Cunix flops a set of queens and ends up with a full house, while his opponent simply mucks after getting his chips all in on the river.

Level 3 (75/150) continues.

Event 16: 14th Place - Manfield

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Seth Manfield (Chevy Chase, MD)
$2,054

Level 17:  Blinds 2,500/5,000 with 500 ante.

On the turn with a board of 6 4 4 2, Seth Manfield moved all-in for 52k.  Alex Torres tanked, then called, showing 32 suited for a pair of ducks.

River was a King and no help for Seth.  He was busted in 14th place for $2,054.

Champ: Table 3 Loses Another

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

 Greenawalt Gets Aces to Hold

After Ed Gross had a knockout on table 3, Travis Greenawalt does the same.  "Make sure you say aces held," says Greenawalt.

Greenawalt and his opponent are all in preflop where Greenawalt's aces dominate pocket queens.

Gross and Greenawalt are both around 60k.

Event 16: Klevitz Doubles

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

On the turn with a board of J 8 9 4, Danny Yousefzadeh moved all-in.  William Klevitz called all-in, showing QT for the flopped straight and the nuts.

Danny had J3 and was drawing dead.  River was a 5.

William doubled up.

End of level and time for a break.  14 players remain.

Michael Benisty is the chip leader with ~360k.  Tom Evers is second with ~320k.

Champ: More Arrivals

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Steve "Alphabet Soup" and "Gorilla Fish" Evans

Deep structures allow players to arrive late and get comfortable without missing a lot of action.

Late arrivals include Miguel Borrero, who is in the seat vacated by our only elimination.

He's joined by current Borgata Leaderboard leader Steve "Alphabet Soup" Eyzerovich (Event 3 PLO winner for $8,299 and Mike Melkersen (runner-up in Event 2 for $22,759).

Players are heading towards their first break of the day as Level 2 (50/100) is wrapping up.

Event 16: 15th Place - Lusher

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

 Neil Lusher (Battersea, England)
$2,054

On the turn with a board of K 4 2 2 , Neil Lusher bet 17k, Tom Evers (bb) check-raised all-in and Neil called all-in for less.

Tom showed A2 for trip 2s.  Neil had QT off (???) and was drawing dead.  River was a 9.

Neil Lusher finished 15th for $2,054.

14 players remain.  Average stack is 173k.

Event 16: Silverman Doubles

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Blinds up to 2k/4k with 400 ante.

Still 15 players.

Karthik opened for 10k, William Klevitz called, then Seth Manfield raised to 35k from the button.

Jose Silverman then moved in from the small blind for ~56k total.  All folded back to Seth, who called.

Jose had AT off.  Seth was ahead with pocket Queens.  Then the board ran out A 8 8 K 2 and Jose paired his Ace to take the pot.  With the dead money in the pot, he more than doubled up.

In a game of chicken on table one, Michael Skrapits was the first to blink.  On the flop of K T 4 rainbow, Michael (sb) checked, Tom Evers bet 20k, Michael raised to 48k, Tom shoved, and after giving it some thought, Michael surrendered.

Championship Qualifier

$270 + $30 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em

If the $2,500 + $200 Championship event price tag is too steep for your bankroll, you can try your hand at winning a seat into the main event for much less.

At noon, a $270 + $30 Championship Qualifier, where approximately 1 in 10 players will win a seat into the Championship Event, got underway.  You can still get in late registration.

The Championship Event started today at 11am with Day 1A, with a second starting day 1B tomorrow (Monday) and concludes Thursday June 21.  Another Championship Qualifier begins at 7pm;  you can see the schedule here.

Champ: First Bustout

$2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

 So Gross, Ed Doubles

Our first Championship Event elimination comes courtesy of Ed Gross (Philadelphia, PA) who calls a 16k river bet with top two pairs.

"He was trying to represent a set," says Gross who is now playing with nearly 60k, essentially a double stack.

Gross has A K against the anonymous player and he wasn't going anywhere as level 2 (50/100) continues.

Event 16: 18th - 16th Places

$1000 + $90 No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Nick Salimbene (Brick, NJ)
16th Place - $1,761

Israel Casis (New York, NY) was first to go.  He got his short-stack in with A5 suited against pocket 9s.  The board was A J J 8 7 and the pocket pair held up.  Israel finished 18th.

Next it was Dave Elliott (Eatontown, NJ) who got his short-stack in the middle holding KQ off against Danny Yousefzadeh's A9 of diamonds.

The board came T 4 3 6 J -- with three diamonds -- and Danny's flush took the pot.  Dave took 17th place.

After a player opened for 8k and got one caller, Nick Salimbene moved his last 50k in.  The opener called, showing pocket 5s.  Nick was racing with AQ suited.  Unfortunately a 5 flopped and Nick whiffed his outs, busting in 16th place.

All three of these players will pick up $1,761 for their efforts.
