      Event 18 Recap

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

Even though Franco Bonacci (Pittsburgh, PA) and Brian Grogan (New York, NY) were heads up, it was a 1.5 million chip pot much earlier at the final table that ultimately decided who would win their second Borgata title.

In the end, the huge hand propelled Bonacci to the victory and gave him Borgata bookend trophies.

"I was fortunate it gave me a lot of chips," says Bonacci who won $23,191. "It helped me pick on the short stacks."

While playing seven-handed, Bonacci called Grogan's 5-bet all in with AK and dominated Grogan's AQ.

"Mad props to him for making the call," said Grogan, who took home $13,668 as runner-up.  He was looking for his second title of the Borgata Summer Poker Open after winning the H.O.R.S.E event last week for $7,605.

Bonacci wasn't afraid to play big pots and when he knocked out John Allan Hinds in third place in a 2.6 million chip pot he had nearly 90% of the chips at the start of heads up play.

"I ran exceptional and played slightly better than mediocre," he said wryly.

Bonacci and Grogan were two of the four players that had between 700-800k when the final table began. But Ted Lukaszewica (9th) and Mark Bramley (6th) couldn't make it into the top 5.

The day began with 244 entries that created a total buy-in of $85,400.  Borgata regulars in the field included Sirous Jamshidi, Dan Spirer and Matt Mazzeo, but all failed to cash.

Notables who did make the money included James Boyle (27th), who sneaked into the money after being down to less than one big blind on the bubble, Cuong Phung (18th), and Stephanie Hubbard (16th).

But the end it was Bonacci who "settled" for the win after busting out of the Championship Event in about six hours.  "I said I was coming to Borgata to win a tournament," he said, "I just didn't think it would be the $400."

Bonacci's first title came in April's Borgata Spring Poker Open in the 6-max for $33,174.  But while he's found success over the last few months, he's putting poker on the back burner.

"I'm in the boot business now," he said, while celebrating with his rail birds.  "Seriously, it's a family business, Franks Shoe's, I just started a month ago."

Ironically Bonacci was wearing flip flops throughout the day while he used steel tipped action to "boot" the competition to the rail.

      Final Table Results

      Place-Name-Amount

1 Franco Bonacci (Pittsburgh, PA) $23,191
2 Brian Grogan (New York, NY) $13,668
3 John Allan Hinds (Winterville, NC) $7,870
4 Moe Farah (Bensalem, PA) ($6,379)
5 John Garry (Bronx, NY) $4,970
6 Mark Bramley (Boston, MA) $4,142
7 Tim Bishop (St. Clairsville, OH) $3,314
8 Mark Clement (Erial, NJ) $2,485
9 Ted Lukaszewica (Garwood, NJ) $1,657
10 John Degeorge (Toms River, NJ) $1,077

      Event 18 Winner: Bonacci

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

      Franco Bonacci (Pittsburgh, PA)
      $23,191

With nearly 90% of the chips in play when heads up play began, it doesn't take long for Bonacci to defeat Brian Grogan heads up.  On the final hand, Grogan moves all in for his last 400k.

      Blinds 20k/40k/4k

      Bonacci: 7 7
      Grogan: A♣ K♣

Flop: 3 6♠ 4 (Bonacci leads with pair of 7s)

      Turn: 10(no change)

      River: 5s (Bonacci straight)

The pair of 7s were good enough, but Bonacci hits a gutshot on the river for the 7 high straight.

"I ran exceptional and played slightly better than mediocre," Bonacci says wryly.

This is Bonacci's second Borgata trophy and he takes home $23,191 for the win.

      Event 18: 2nd Place - Grogan

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

       Brian Grogan (New York, NY)
      $13,668

Grogan can't overcome a 7 to 1 heads up deficit and finishes in second place to Franco Bonacci.

On the final hand Grogan's A♣ K♣ doesn't connect against the 7 7 of Bonacci who ends up with a straight on the river. "It was the first time I was at risk the entire tournament," says Grogan.

"I had a big stack at the final table," says Grogan, who ran his stack to 1.8 million, "I would've have like to have won, but anything less than the top three would've been disappointing."

Grogan's second place finish for $13,668 goes along with his win in the H.O.R.S.E event ($7,605), the only two events he's played in the Borgata Summer Poker Open.

      Event 18: 3rd Place - Hinds

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

       John Allan Hinds (Winterville, NC)
      $7,870

      Blinds 20k/40k/4k ante

Hinds raises to 85k from the button
      Franco Bonacci makes it 185k
      Hinds raises to 345k
Bonacci moves all in and has Hinds covered
      Hinds calls 900k more

      Hinds: 5♣ 5
      Bonacci A♠ 8

      Flop: 8♣ K♠ 10♠ (Bonacci pair of 8s)

      Turn: 4♣

      River Q

The pair of 8s wins the coin flip and Bonacci takes down a 2.6 million chip pot.  He has 4.2 of the 4.8 million chips in play as he's heads up with Brian Grogan for the title.

Hinds finishes in third place and earns $7,870.

      Event 18: 4th Place - Farah

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

      Moe Farah (Bensalem, PA)
      $6,379

Farah is down to 200k when he moves all in with K9 vs the A3 of Franco Bonacci.  Farah doesn't get any help and finishes in 4th place for $6,379.

      Event 18: 5th Place - Garry

      $350 + $50 Big Stack No Limit Hold'em (Re-Entry)

      Ben Starkweather - Chip Leader

The remaining 35 players are done with Day 2 and Ben Starkweather (New York, NY) is the chip leader with 948,500.

"I was super patient," says the New York resident, who is originally from Winston Salem, NC.  "I was card dead most of the day. I didn't build my stack until the end, that's when I got my chips."

Heading into Day 3 with the big stack mean he's in good position to go after the $198,078 first prize, but says, "I already told my friends there's a long, loooong, way to go."

The average stack is 261k (44 BB) as play resumes noon Wednesday with blinds at 3k/6k/500 ante.

      Top 5 Stacks

      Champ: 36th Place - Odessky

      $2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

On a flop of A 10 6,  Israel Odessky (Brooklyn, NY) is all in for his last 34k holding 10 J for middle pair.

Vitaly Kovyazin makes the call with A J and gets the knockout when the board runs clean.

Israel Odessky is the first to cash in the Borgata Summer Poker Open Championship Event.

      Champ: Bubble Breaks Bonn's Heart

      $2,500 + $200 Championship Deep Stack NLH (Re-Entry)

Chris Bonn is the unfortunate bubble boy who walks away with memories and the experience.

Bonn makes his last stand with A 10 against the K♣ 9♣ for Mike Linster for 32k. Linster flops a king to win the hand and knock Bonn out in 37th place.

The 36 remaining players are in the money and will finish Level 18 after 12 minutes (half the hand-for-hand time) is put back on the clock.
